The driving licence authority decides
Our overview is for guidance only, not legal advice or a guarantee. Your driving licence authority alone decides whether and what you need to provide as proof. Ask there before applying – we're happy to help with countries that have no clear regulation.
How the conversion works
- Check country and licence class
Above, you can see whether you need theory, practical training, both or neither.
- Gather documents
The checklist below shows you what the driving licence authority requires.
- Application at the driving licence authority
There, you submit the application for conversion and find out which tests are required.
- Preparation with us
Theory lessons and driving lessons in your language – focused on the test rather than just accumulating lessons.
- Test and German driving licence
After passing the test, you will receive your German driving licence.
Checklist: What you need
The exact documents required vary depending on the city and country. This is the usual basic set:
- Application for conversionYou can get the form from your driving licence office, often online as well.
- ID and residenceValid passport or ID card, residence permit (if required) and registration certificate.
- Your foreign driving licenceThe original. If it uses a foreign script, the authority will often require a translation.
- Biometric passport photoCurrent and in accordance with the authority's requirements.
- Eye testCertificate from a recognised provider.
- Proof of first-aid trainingUsually required if tests are required – we offer the course.
- Proof of residence in GermanyFor example, the registration date – important for the deadlines.
- FeesFor the application and tests. The authority or testing organisation will tell you the amount.
Keep an eye on the deadline
With a driving licence from a country outside the EU and EEA, you can generally only drive for a limited period after moving to Germany – usually six months. After that, you need a German driving licence. Ask your driving licence authority about your personal deadline early on.
